Q: What is the difference between the Series 1 design and the Series 2 design of this gate? Have the plastic latches been upgraded?

Thank you for your question. While the two models are very similar, the latching system has been redesigned on model 5050. They both still function in the same manner where the latch can easily be depressed with one thumb, however, the “gate stopper” associated with the direction that the door opens is now an internal function instead of it being its own separate part.

Q: is it possible to remove one of the bars/spindles from the hinge end of the gate to accommodate a handrail?

Thank you for your question. All 4 spindles are needed to properly mount the gate safely. Additionally, the metal bars are welded and should not be removed. This will increase the spacing between the bars and poses a safety hazard. A child or pet could easily become entrapped. The distance between the bars meets JPMA and ASTM standards and should not be increased. It should not be altered or mounted in any manner other than what is outlined in the installation manual.

Q: Can a 3 yr old open this? I need something she can open to keep our puppy out of her room.

Thank you for your email. Because every child is different, we cannot say with certainty whether or not your 3 year old would be able to open the gate. While our products are intended to be used to protect children ages 6-24 months, this is based on average development. To open the gate, it does require depressing the tab on the latch and then physically lifting the gate frame to clear the latch receptacle prior to swinging open.
