Take a class at your own pace, with one of the premier instructors, for a fraction of the cost. GREAT VALUE!
If you are contemplating taking a class with a pro or an experienced amateur as seems to be popular in our area, but are concerned with the cost or you learn better outside the traditional classroom and want to work at your own pace, at your own times, I highly recommend Digital Photography Masterclass by Tom Ang.Masterclass includes in-depth discussions on critical topics such as aperture, depth of field, lighting, tone, white balance, photo planes, and complete with field assignments to sharpen the new skills.I highly recommend Digital Photography Masterclass - I plan on taking this "class" more than once.UPDATE - this book is a great reference to use and goes well with the Lynda courses available online

But how you benefit from it is in your hand
Experience is the best teacher. It's a great book to have at hand. But how you benefit from it is in your hand. Even if you read lots of books on how to swim, you will not learn unless you go into the water.Honest advise, replicate samples of picture composition of Tom Ang from his book. Get a notebook and write down the formula (speed, opening, lens, files number, etc) and you will learn a lot. Or simply write down info in word doc with your photo. Now you have an ebook of your own :)Check 1x.com - best photo site I discover

Great text for supplementing your photography studies
I bought this after checking a copy out of the library. It's got great information, including actionable exercises you can do with your camera that will help you get the results you want in your shots. It covers everything from the basics of exposure to composition to post-processing.

This is the Master Class.
This book is suited to learn the intricacies of digital photography. Well written lots of example and assignments to practice what you have just read. One of the good things is the photo analysis that highlights what is good or bad about a photograph. You don't have to agree with the analysis but you will get to understand another view point on the art.The target audience is the more advance photographer. I would highly recommend this book to help take your photography to the next level.

A good buy
Photography books can be expensive and many times not very helpful. This book is neither and you can be comfortable buying it if you are a amateur photographer who has been taking pictures for awhile.Masterclass may be stretching it a bit.But it is a really beautiful and easy to understand book that can help push you forward if you have got a grasp on the basics of hobbyist photography.

A great read for students of photography
I found the book informative and concise. I especially like the assignments and the sample photos. Sample photos provided the shutter speed, f-stop, and iso numbers which were very helpful. It frees the student of photography from some of the conventional wisdoms. I thank Mr. Ang for sharing his expertise with the readers. I strongly recommend this book.

Excellent book
I am continuing my education in photography. I checked this book out of the library first and decided I wanted it for my own collection. I am a novice and I am learning still.

Excellent book, not for beginners, or maybe purchase in advance ready for when you learn more and the book starts to make sense
Very intuitive book, one to keep for ever as there is so much to do and so much to learn. If you have been disappointed in the past with some books which maybe concentrate on beginner to intermediate, then this book will serve you well as Tom Ang assumes you have reasonable technical camera knowledge and some sort of photographers eye.He puts you through the paces but its well worth the ride!

Not for a beginner I don't think...
I didn't like this as a beginner to photography. I felt that it threw me right in at the deep end with lessons and tasks and plenty of pictures, but the descriptions were too tecnical and didn't really mean much. I think someone doing a course or someone who has some experience would find this book good, but not a beginner.I returned it and got the Beginners Photography Guide from DK instead and have found that brilliant, giving me plent of ideas.Hope that helps.

Informative photography course, very highly recommended!
Fantastic read, I am now looking at working through the course lessons one at a time.Very informative and hopefully will help me to improve my photography. I have been practicing for the last near 35 years and now really wish to advance but hold back from the college courses that are fairly expensive and time consuming, this is the ideal way for me.Good read, informative, and very highly recommended for the beginner or like myself, the advance amateur.

As I have only read up to chapter 5 so far (due to work) I am find this book very good indeed reading each chapter sometimes twice then reverting back to other books on the subject, already I can see improvements in my photo's I can recommend this book to any person who wishes to improve their photography.

Great value
Having past the beginner stage (I think!) I was looking for more in depth information. But at the same time I wanted a single book that covered a wide range of topics, rather than separate books for portraits, landscape etc. This fits the bill well. At normal price it would be worth it, at 78% off it is a bargain.
